What exactly is support?
It’s mostly healing, lesser to that of a recovery break. It can also be used for some other BS depending on circumstances

And how does it differ from protection?
Same as the difference between regen and defense in ao I assume
Protection is mostly for blocking and shielding
I should probably point out that each stat has a different response to an attack
More resistance than defense but ig
Aggression: parrying
Protection: blocking
Mobility: dodging
Support: reversing
A block doesn’t do anything except neutralise damage, a dodge makes it possible for the attack to strike something else, a parry can neutralise the damage AND do a bit of damage to the offender, and a reverse makes you heal over the damage.
Bit more complex but that’s the gist

We were kidnapped, so on the one hand they probably intend to help us but on the other hand it would be really damn funny if this entire system had no willing participants
