Zormego’s Idea/Writing Hodgepodge

I think I’ve said it a bunch of times before (maybe not as much as the number of times I’ve ranted about cruddy game mechanics), but I plan to go into video game design as a career, and in my spare time, I like coming up with ideas for games. Are most of those ideas going to be a reality? Haha, no. There are some that I want to finish at some point, though, like this one.

The general premise is combining AA/WoM/AO and bullet hells such as Nuclear Throne, Enter the Gungeon, and Touhou; it’s fitting that AO is a huge inspiration, since WoM was what actually got me into writing characters and stories.

Water Magic and some Spells

Originally I wanted to lean more into the WoM/AO inspiration, so some spells were instead hitscan projectiles, like Water Beam. W.Beam would’ve evolved into a spell that would launch small lasers that would recoil off of where the beam landed before turning to collide with the main beam’s impact zone.

Inventory Menu Concept (sorry about the lighting)

Notes

  • Inventory functions similarly to AO, with five (maybe?) Rarities for Items, as well as a “Unique” rarity for stuff like boss drops. I think boss drops would be limited to those found in side content, and not from story enemies.
  • Limited to four equips; only one “Accessory” slot for anything that doesn’t resemble armor. The Stats box above the Accessory slot could be clicked to change to vanity equips.
  • Weapons and Potions would be equipped like armor.
  • Name consists of a first and last name; picked from a preset list or typed in manually.
  • Species name (Kobold, in this case) could be hovered over to show Species stats and traits.
  • Darkness Magic (leftmost) is the file’s Base Magic in this example; it can’t be changed, but gives a unique benefit to the player in return. Magic could be clicked to view Spells and Stats.

Weapons Concept

If this sounds familiar, than it’s because I actually asked about potential weapons to include in some Loki person’s thread.

Base Magic Effects

Even though each Magic would have unique spells, I wanted to make sure that there’d be a little more differentiation between them, since each one will have at least a couple of spells similar to others (i.e. Each Magic starts with a basic Blast spell that turns into an Animal-Shaped Blast at Tier 10).

Will the fishes be able to roll?

I have not considered adding fish to the game.

The trout population is in shambles.

How could you forget the most crucial part of any rpg?

Felt like showing more of my concept today.

ARMOR STATS

The idea was to allow the player to gain buffs that affect the player in small, niche ways, as well as letting the player play the game well enough without having to grind for gear.

This is basically my take on AO’s amulets. Also thought of a side boss that could drop Charged and Hasty-like bracelets.

VAMPIRE PLAYER SPECIES

Most Species I’ve thought of don’t have any unique gimmicks tied to them, so I thought Vampires could be a nice way to break away from that.

Played Gartic Phone for the first time with some Darkaners; funniest shit I’ve seen all year.

Anyway here’s the first paragraph of a short story I’ve been writing

Here’s an idea I had for that game I’ve brought up here; it’s bosses that can randomly show up in arenas or similar areas that can drop items.

brings back memories

Ask and you- wait, I already did this bit on a post about some Prisma Magic thing.

Technically in my writing, my sona is a part of a species that evolved separately from kobolds, making them seem more like dragons. Technicalities are lame, though, and they’re literally “Kobolds but smaller and with wings” at the end of the day.

It’s like if you slapped raven wings onto a dog and called it a completely original species; yeah, it is from a technical standpoint, but it’s still a generic dog with generic wings.

Also game title is censored because it’s a placeholder and I have no ability to name.

wait WHAT

the prisma has spread to ur world???

bro u gotta be careful

His world has magical crack, get him!

Less of an idea/writing update and more so me talking about my high school graduation.

Most infuriating fucking day of my life, regarding how I forgot my clarinet at home when I had to play with the band (it was the ONE thing I needed to bring!), some idiots brought their babies and they did nothing but be loud and annoying, and how it took me HALF A FUCKING HOUR TO GET OUT OF THE PARKING LOT. Also got screwed out of picking up a soda because of that, which was just the push I needed to crash the hell out for the first time in years.

Basically fuck this town and everyone in it

On a better note, I got a watch from my Grandma (or at least the one that’s still alive). Looks great; kind of reminds me of that one Ridley alt in SSBU.

anyway here’s an idea I had for weapons similar to arcanium in that game concept i keep talking about here

I might scrap it game-wise, because it reads like a carbon copy of Arcanium, even though it’s a thing lore-wise. Sure, it’s not tied to any magic pollution mechanics and you can’t switch what Magic the weapon uses, but that’s about it. If y’all have any ideas to differentiate it, let me know.

oh right, Scales are what I think the currency could be named btw

Got my watch fitted, now it isn’t bigger than my brain.

Anyway do y’all want more Magic ideas after I get home? I got some spare time today.

I’m hungry, feed me

One, thank you for actually showing some form of interest; it’s neat.

Two, this is the list of Source Magics that I have planned. They’re all self-explanatory: the only ones that are a little more elaborate are Toxic (think a mix of AR’s liquidy Poison Magic combined with AO’s version) and Energy (basic bitch magic).

Darkness is basically Shadow Magic, yippee. I wanted almost every Source Magic to have some sort of gimmick though, and I figured that taking the term “looming shadows” seriously would be funny.

One of the two Source Magics that didn’t have a doc until recently. Ideally, it would be the only Magic type to cause Bleeding, with related Fusions having more unique types of DoTs.

Use Energy Magic with a default Human character to create John Magic
Might replace some of the tiers; I’ve thought about it, and adding boosts to pre-existing stats doesn’t sound all that great of an idea.

Definitely replacing the ability for chip damage on Swirling Fire/Flaming Phoenix; this was made early on when the concept leaned more towards being like 2D World of Magic instead of a bullet hell, and bullet hells love the concept of grazing bullets. It also doesn’t help how two player species (Werewolf and Vampire) rely on it for one of their traits.

Also I thought of having higher tiers gain different colors of fire, since fire IRL changes color based on its temperature, although it might screw up some people’s character theming.

Might change the Takeover status on Flora Magic. It’s supposed to be something you can have right at the start, and early on, the odds a new player has of getting high Takeover stacks is pretty slim. At the same time, when you get used to using it, you can get the full damage buff almost constantly, which can be pretty overpowered.

Not sure if I want it to be a normal DoT like Bleeding and Burning, though. Sapping Magic Energy could be the way to go.

The idea for the status mechanic was that getting hit would make it harder for the in-game player character to focus on what’s around them (which is basically a mini-vietnam), so the lack of bullet visibility could reflect that.

The other Source Magic that didn’t have a doc before. Might make the first Spell a laser instead.

Yep, this one’s been in the Early Development Hell for a while now. Doesn’t even have completely correct formatting.

Y’all have already seen Water Magic; think I only have one more spell to think of for it.

Was thinking Wind Magic could either erase enemy bullets when it hits, or have knockback. If I go with the latter, it has to have reduced damage, since you could otherwise bullshit an enemy into every single shot you miss.

Hear me out, let wind deflect bullets back at people

uh

Already got that idea down for its last main spell (thinking each Magic will get one supportive spell after the first seven). Yeah, I know most of this is still Water Magic stuff, but those are Tiers I’ll work on later.

Ah, I see

Yeah I don’t really have any other ideas for wind

Played Gartic in Darkane again; some of y’all concern me at best.

Somebody even managed to scare him, how the FUCK do you even do that??

Figured out a viable replacement for Flora Magic’s Takeover status. It would work in-lore, since Magic Energy is actually naturally produced by cells.

Making him of all people take mental damage is an achievement in its own league

Worked on Species for my concept. Might change some of these (especially Felids; the only reason I have it when Dragon-Likes exist is because it’d be weird to have dog furries and no cat furries), but I think these eight are good enough.

Which Species Would You Pick?
  • Canarian
  • Dragon-Like
  • Felid
  • Human
  • Kitsune
  • Kobold
  • Vampire
  • Werewolf

Aside from that, I had an idea last night to steal “borrow” the scrapped Books idea from World of Magic.

Figured that having a book that gets more in-depth on the player’s Magic in-lore would be nice, and so would one about the player’s chosen Species. As an example, I’m thinking that Kitsunes would have frail physical bodies, with most living only up to fifty at-best, or that Vampires only get weakened when exposed to heat/sunlight rather than evaporating immediately.

Was planning to complete all Source Magic spell lists, but I got disillusioned with an idea I had for Toxic Magic spells almost immediately, and that was the first one I decided to hit. It was going to have small gas clouds that could do a bit of extra damage to enemies standing in them on some spells, and toxic puddles that would increase Magic Energy usage for enemies on others. Might just relegate that gimmick to a support spell.
