Camping: A serious problem without a fix

One of the thing I hate about modern society is being mentioned here.

Someone once provide a question. Imagine you a leader of certain utopia. Not like modern utopia. Just like a very peaceful, natural and beautiful village with everything required available. Everyone is equal in term of wealth and live quality. Hierarchically you still the leader.

One day, the food warehouse got hit by storm and winter almost here. So, you have to repair it before winter or else people gonna die of starvation.

You ask your people to help, majority is lending their hand in this problem, but there are few who goes “If I help you guys then I cannot do what I like!”

The question is, how would you deal with this issue? You need literally everyone to fix the warehouse, meaning these people not helping will mean less food.

My answer is to kick their bum ass out if they dont want to do what they should. If they want to stay in my community, do what community do. Expect community problem if you want community benefits.

The same can be said with those who have high renown. If you want to have high renown even solely for number, expect problem that high renown will have. Using “But they dont like” as excuse dont work buddy. But they like the big number dont they? This is equivalent of someone want money but dont want to work.

If you don’t want to pvp just reset your renown.

Fair point

I know, I’ve been told the non-ramming speed ram thing was a bad idea, so in the final draft I’ll make sure to explicitly state that arming cannons and ramming speed are how you lose the protection.

The ship protection itself is because, well, either a: you kick the players off the ship so they can’t camp you, b: you gain the shield for just yourself (but run the chance that they’ll just chase you down and smash your ship, forcing combat or otherwise trying to hurt you outside of said shield), or… I may have forgotten what c would’ve been in this case.

You also still have gunpowder barrels as a problem to worry about.

But, thank you. Sorry that PvP is in such a terrible state, I hope that my eventual suggestions make it to Vetex so that the place can be better overall.

The ships will not be “invulnerable forever,” it’s just going to be a short amount of time. I don’t intend for it to be a forever thing, god no.

The ship combat aspect would be if people go out of the way to ruin you first, then smash a ship that is a sitting duck due to your respawn timer and (lack of) candles being lit. That’s just the same as beating up the ship captain and crew without destroying the ship first, but again, it’s intended to be more like NPC ships. Same treatment and all.

A common statement I get is “just reset your renown if you don’t want to PvP” - which, as I’m going to be clear: That’s not the point of why I have the high fame.

As I’ve said before: I like my number going up, and I intended to fight real players with legitimate builds that aren’t built simply to win fights. Builds that actually explore intuitive ideas, such as a blitz build, and have a proper gimmick to it, rather than a “I win because I’m immortal” preschool playground imagination… game, thing, type of build. Yes, that was a lot of words, but I couldn’t figure out how to actually word it.

Often, though, when it comes to arguments about my position with PvP and why I have a high number even though there are people who - by any means - aren’t playing fair and for the spirit of the game, I feel like I’m simply fighting the flower in the sky; for each time, there’s always another person saying the same things, and it’s exhaustive.

I really just want to have an actual discussion, when it comes to things like these. I don’t want to deal with insults; I don’t want to deal with people who say the same things ad nauseum, even if sometimes it feels like it’s the same person, on a different account, for how each time, it’s just repetition. No, I’m not accusing you of that. I’m paranoid, but not stupid.

I just want the place at least a modicum better, and more aware of the problems.

Not a hellhole of arguments, for everything’s seen as an insult, dominated by swirling vortexes of green, glowing playstyles.

Still think a permanent shield on your ship until those conditions are met is still problematic but fair enough.

…I forgot to also mention a timer, but honestly, I’m not sure if a timer is nessecary considering how quickly someone may decide to charge in on a pirate ship.

Yeah. Maybe like, a thirty second timer or something.

You have people who have very slow ships, after all. So I want to consider those during the whole plan… I guess.

Well if you do intend to still engage with PvP, wouldn’t things like duels and Elysiums fulfill that itch and solve a lot of problems that you have with how things work in openworld PvP? It’d allow you to choose your own fights so that you don’t run into the risk of fighting a metamancer as often, and if you do happen to challenge one of them before realizing, you can leave the duel/stop the fight at anytime and look for someone else.

Maybe, but. I really don’t know how to go about with Elysium (I might blow up on contact) and… going out and challenging people is a difficult task to me, too, because who would want to do it with… someone who barely knows how to combat outside of point and push button, so far?

I’ll try to look into those options, even if I still… keep PvP on because I’m stubborn and probably a fool, but yeah, I’ll peek into those.

…Properly, of course.

Yeah fair enough, but honestly this isn’t really a big enough issue to warrant being addressed by a game update. The solution you proposed would also make actual hunting more difficult because leaderboard players would be able to log more easily and would contradict the radial combat tag feature.

Also if I were you I wouldn’t go around labeling people who disagree with you as “insults”. Seems rather counterintuitive to any meaningful discussion.

far too extreme, let the leaderboarders leaderboard.
the only people getting caught in the crossfire are people that want to raise their leaderboard points for no reason and refuse to burn them.

Tailed I’m going to be straight with you.
If you act like an idiot, people are going to treat you like an idiot.
If you realize that everyone around you is giving you weird looks and saying you’re acting dumb, you’re probably doing something wrong.

9 times out of 10, doubling down is not the move.

We offered a simple easy solution and for some reason you decided to say no and that you’d rather treat AO like an incremental game (the fleet system is an infinitely better use of your time for this exact purpose, by the way) and now this thread’s gone on for like 90 messages longer than it should have.

You’re not wrong for not being good at the game, you have never been taught to be. Every single pvp experience you have gone through has been a curb stomp where you learn nothing and cannot progress your skill of actually fighting real people. But due to the fact that pve eventually gets boring you cannot simply turn off the toggle or else you’ll just get bored and quit right then and there. I have yet to find an easy way to learn to PVP, duels are a band aid fix because everyone who accepts the duel is another pvp sage and anyone near my skill level refuses. I technically count this as a flaw to AO.

…when I got actual insults levied at me during the whole conversation, yes, I was talking about those.

Don’t do this.

This just makes you look like the pot.

Anyways, even if it “made actual hunting more difficult”, you have to admit some changes need to be made to prevent people from losing to camping. Unfair advantages need to be stomped out - it’s a necessity for the health of a game. Even if you lose a lot of the toxic players, you’ll still have a much cleaner group of people - even those who had to go become meta because of those meta players.

You still have players who can appear out of nowhere and hunt you down. You don’t know when the posters update.

And if Radial Combat was so much of a deal in this case? Increase the size on islands, whilst not wearing the cloak. Now you have radial combat not being “negated”. But what was the issue with my solutions and radial combat, though? You still have campers on the brig and on the bounty board, the major part of the problem that I wanted to deal with.

Absolutely not what I said, still. That’s just you putting words in my mouth. In no time, did I spend, that I wanted to “treat the game like an incremental.” There was no “doubling down,” it was just people insulting me (especially you). There were no “simple solutions” (especially as ThoseWhoSnow put it best here).

That’s why I started thinking of things like “ever increasing fame,” now that I think about it, and those moments of despair push me forwards, even if I’m in hell for trying to do something that some think as “stupid ideas”.

Once more, for Theoretical: You’re not being straight with me. You’re hitting me with bendy snap-to-wrist rulers, and acting like you’ve got me in cuffs. This is just you. This isn’t an argument, this is debating your morality and why you’re superior. You’ve hijacked the conversation.

ok now you’re just lying.
you said you just wanted to grow big numbers (treating it like an incremental game) and the simple solution was talking to a single NPC to burn the big number that does nothing but shackle you down and make the game clearly less enjoyable for you.

This is what I’m talking about when I say you’re acting like an idiot.
You are complaining about a problem that you have been giving a solution to instead of shutting up and using the solution because you want to treat the game like something its not.
If you don’t want to work for your big number, you’re going to suffer for having it.
That’s the long and short of it, no exceptions.

You are raising leaderboard points to not climb the leaderboards and then getting pissy when leaderboarders take them from you to climb the leaderboard.

Would you rather me lie to you and tell you that you’re acting smart?

The way you’re acting makes it look as if you were never taught about the scientific phenomena called Cause and Effect.
If you understood it then problems like this would never get the opprotunity to become problems since you’d be able to predict the effects of your causes and spot the causes of effects.
Both of which you appear thoroughly incapable of.

If you don’t like my assessment of you, then fix it.
I can’t, but I’m not going to mince my words to make you feel better about it.

That ain’t really true I was pretty high on the leaderboard for a while with fucking glass boxing and no pots XD

Yeah.
Was.

At this point, I think you’re just saying these things to try and keep pushing me down.

I don’t really want to engage with someone whose entire philosophy with an argument like this is “shut the opponent down at every turn to win”.

There’s no lies (nor any point where you actually come up with lies I “made” as proof), there’s just you making things up about what I said for the first few comments, then repeatedly using those same made-up topics, just in different flavors.

It’s hence why I called Ad Nauseum; you’re repeating yourself again, and again, and again.

Despite me already proving what you’ve said, each time, you keep coming back to try and drown me in words never spoken.

Stop lying.

Stop arguing.

Stop throwing gasoline onto the fire that you started, if you want it extinguished.

I only (begrudgingly, if it’s really this necessary) reply so that people who jump to the bottom won’t get confused and assume positions based on the vitriolic statements you’ve made. You have used nothing but saliva after a while. And I don’t want to put up with it anymore, but again: You won’t stop.

You’ve blown this way past the original topic at this point, and I wanted it to stop two days ago.

TL;DR: I hate you, but only because you won’t stop causing problems with a person you didn’t even know, simply because they spoke out about an issue, and refused to see every point made and discovered.

I’m not mad at you, there is no vitriol.
I just don’t respect stupid people who can’t figure out how to hammer a singular nail.

I have simply been telling you how to solve your problem, and that there, in the end, isn’t a problem beyond the one you created for yourself with increasingly less respect.

I don’t particularly care if you hate me, you asked for a solution, we all gave you a solution.
You said ‘nuh uh I dun wanna, meh beeeggggg numbar to impoant!’

By the way, saying ‘ad nauseum >:(’ over and over again doesn’t disprove anything I’ve said.
If you want to hold your ground in a debate/argument, you need to actually prove your stance.

Just because you don’t like the truth doesn’t make it untrue.
Your big number is a shackle of equivalent size and you are fully within your power to shed it.

And now you’ve devolved into insults, entirely.

I don’t really think there’s any worth in trying to speak to you beyond telling you that your insults are just a waste of time, especially as nobody really wants to argue with someone who gradually goes further and further into repetition. You’ve repeatedly told me the same things, over and over again, like I said before.

Then you throw ad hominems.

Then you go back to repetition.

Then you repeat this cycle over and over again.

There’s been nothing critical but the rotten tomatoes you throw.

Forever more, you continually evade new points that are made and brought up, you continue to argue endlessly about the same points and downgrade things I say to such a level that the Strawman Fallacy is a valid callout.

You want to ignore the truth, yourself, so you make up the same claims and repaint them. It doesn’t work.

You want to insult me because you believe I’m in the wrong for telling you that your “solution” is not going to fix the entire game. That doesn’t work, either.

You want to claim you’re a large group of people, though mostly it’s been you and a few others who decided to agree on the basis of a more well-known person (devotee), following the authority rather than looking at both parties as neutrals. We don’t want outliers in the argument, either.

I truly wish I could block you from replying to my posts, but unfortunately, I don’t have that ability, especially as you continually go out of your way to mock, belittle and downplay everything I do to “just numbers,” and believe that unless it’s numbers I get, that I’m going to throw a fit over “solutions” you’ve provided.

I hold out for the growing fame because I want to one day be there to fight someone worth my time, that doesn’t play the meta just for the meta’s sake, and be recognized as a player gradually growing, and not be objectified as another point to someone’s point to their scoreboard.

I want to see myself improve in this game, but I cannot, because there is nothing but Infinite Resistance/Regeneration, Bounty Campers and Brig Campers, and generally toxic people who will fight tooth and nail to keep the game the way it is for their benefit: An unbalanced, incoherent mess to anyone but the most optimized of folk.

You’re no better than those who drag me down - get off my ankles, and stop being the lead weight that actively kills people’s drive to play the game.

Rant over. I beg.
