I personally think this style of fishing got stale towards the end of AA’s development, honestly.

It seems he still has no intentions of changing fishing

Then it persists.

You’d really think that after having to tell people clearly unhappy with the fishing system that it isn’t going to change for however many years he’d get the idea that people don’t like it.
Not to mention that it completely fails in its one singular job that he keeps bringing up.

Doesn’t want people to macro fishing, yet makes it the least involved part of the game. I seriously want to know Vetex’s thought process

Not gonna lie I think it depends on your perspective on what fishing is for you. I used to fish a really while back and I don’t really remember why I did so, nor the reason why I stopped fishing at around 11K but after trying it again a few days ago, it really is relaxing.

When I looked at it on Vetex’s view of what fishing should be, that is fishing just for the sake of fishing, it was somewhat nice. I had like two people in total that joined fishing with me while we wait for the empires update around the Sameria bridge and so far we had some nice conversations. Though then again, I still didn’t like fishing in general so I intended to stop at around the pity, 12K fishes caught to be specific, to test something in the update.

When I look at it at the perspective where you’re just grinding for the items like sunkens, it really is tedious having to just sit there and endlessly click to get something you want.

Overall, I see the reason why Vetex doesn’t intend to change it after that experience but at the same time, there’s rarely any people who just fish for the sake of fishing. From a game developer’s perspective, it’s better to cater to what majority of the playerbase wants after all. It’s the reason why people prefer Halo 2 over everything else because it specifically catered to a wide variety of audience rather than the sweats.

For me its both.
When I’m fishing to pass the time, its so agonizingly boring that every minute feels like 10.
When I’m fishing to actually get something, its so agonizingly tedious that I decide to go do literally anything else with my time.

Yeah, that’s kinda the reason why people kept saying that fishing is better with people. It was nice talking to some random dudes that joined fishing with me compared to when I was just fishing alone, I guess.

Fishing isn’t better with people, it’s just that you have fun socialising with others while you’re fishing. It doesn’t make fishing any better, unless you pass it off as “a side activity to do when talking” (which it clearly isn’t due to the existence of sunkens).

If you have to actively distract yourself from the thing you’re doing to “enjoy” it, then you aren’t enjoying it lol.

anyways I wonder where the idea for a fishing update came from

Well firstly I’ve seen and played games with much much better fishing systems.
Secondly the topic that made me write this is at the bottom of the suggestion.

How exactly is fishing something we’re not meant to hard-focus on? Sunken items are some of the most valuable in the game alongside acrimonies, and the only ways to obtain them besides fishing for long periods of time are diving chests and lost cargo.

I see the way fishing is right now as sitting on the fence.
It requires just enough attention that it can’t get away with being completely braindead.
Its the worst of both worlds.
So that leaves a question:

Do you want to keep it completely brain dead but make it not require player attention so people aren’t actively being annoyed by it?
OR
Do you want to make it require more attention from the player by making it more interactive and rewarding?

If vetex really wants people to get fish by “turning off their brains”:
Trawl nets. There’s the solution to that.

If he changes his mind:
The entire rest of the suggestion.

the fishing minigame itself isn’t supposed to require a lot of focus which is why it’s so simple right now is what I mean. I explained later in the thread what changes I’d like to see get added to improve fishing without making the mechanic itself require more focus

So the enjoyment comes from talking to others, not fishing, meaning that the true fishing is quite literally the friends we made along the way…

neither, I already explained I’d rather it be treated as a more immersive alternative to collect rewards, I gave some examples up above

:fax:

make it so sunkens cant be obtained from fishing but only diving :fire::100:

Then you have the dumpster fire we have right now.
There is nothing immersive about playing click for fish simulator.

How many times do I have to tell people this: Fence sitting gets you nowhere, make a choice, stop trying to compromise things that are mutually exclusive.

As someone who has fished far too much, I understand this. When I was waiting for nimbus to release, I fished for about a week straight, I hopped on Arcane every day when I got home, and I fished until I went to bed.
That week I remember as being incredibly boring, the highlights were when people occasionally came to the island and there was someone to keep me company, but if there wasn’t anyone there? Clicking mindlessly, that’s all it was.

This is coming from someone who likes fishing in games, I enjoy Stardew Valley’s fishing because it’s more interesting, I have to move a bar and actually try, Terraria’s fishing is slightly more interesting than Arcane’s because crates, fishing up enemies and daily fishing quests. (And I finished Supreme Helper Minion)

I overall would rather Arcane’s fishing to be a bit more interactive, even if maybe it’s a timed event, something like:
