Technically it actually fits the second alternative but it makes it more interactive/rewarding by adding ways you find unique places to fish, not by changing the main mechanic since that’s not happening and I don’t think it’d be worth adding either way

I see the way fishing is right now as sitting on the fence.
It requires just enough attention that it can’t get away with being completely braindead.
Its the worst of both worlds.
So that leaves a question:

A question that only exists if you believe that a gameplay mechanic should either require all of your attention, or none at all. A mechanic that requires you to be ready to press a button, but doesn’t require constant interaction is just fine. It’s a mini-game of patience.

Do you want to make it require more attention from the player by making it more interactive and rewarding?

Wouldn’t making it more interactive be enough to make it require more attention? Why mention rewards? I’ll tell you why - this isn’t about fishing, this is about getting an extra 30 defense and 4 attack speed over using a piece of Cernyx gear. No matter what changes, you would still be frustrated by not getting the result you want.

I think it’ll be fine once abyssal diving is out, 1/1500 per chest for a sunken is much better than fishing so if people still say sunkens are gatekept behind fishing they’re just lying to themselves

Yeah that’s another thing too. People view fishing as a way to get sunkens and will burn themselves out doing so when I think it should be as a way of just getting fish with a small chance to get a sunken (Which is what it is). I think making it so that fishing requires a single button to press instead of spam clicking will make a giant difference. Rather than wasting development effort implementing 5 systems just for fishing no matter how cool they seem.

And the abyssal thing is helping that too.
