when you get tired of spending 20 hours grinding so you can have fun playing the game but everyone involved in the game that acknowledges you says its okay
i genuinely dont believe theres a good defense for hecate essence being so rare because i have never heard one
usually i agree that vetex can do what he wants but like… this just fucking sucks i maybe have like 130-150 hours total on AO ,and if i grinded hecate essence for as long as some people have, id end up with 13-15% of my playtime being purely trying to find it
we should not be trying to defend horrific game design for “lore reasons” and im apalled at how some people dont understand that
“its not that deep!” - many people ive seen on this thread
having to spend that long on a tedious grind to find a single thing that lets you play the game how youd like to seems pretty deep to me idk man
yea I really don’t get how somebody can see a complaint about something as egregious as hecate essence that’s even half as important for build making and think:
“Its not that deep!”
“Its just magic’s identity!”
“Lore!!!”
I’m also baffled by how I’m apparently the bad guy for telling a bunch of trolls to leave and taking it to DMs… where it belongs!
You should be able to figure out whether or not you like a magic by around Argos to Calvus. At the end of the day, this is a choice made alongside choosing your name and deciding your character. Magic is a core part of you, and it is the first major choice you make. No matter what you think, no matter what you believe, you are not entitled to a simple solution to undo this choice. You have two options: Deal with it and get the essence, or remake your file.
Your poor choice in magic and continued usage of it done out of stubbornness is no one’s problem but your own. Don’t like using your magic? Have an acrimony? Feel free to try another build. You have choices, you just don’t want to use the other options, and instead want to complain about why this super rare essence in the lore isn’t more common because the other options are a choice you can just back out of.
I know for a fact you’re also going to argue about “why should I have to switch builds, magic shouldn’t be this difficult to change. It’s bad game design.” Games give you choices all the time, and they’re not always easy to back out of. Choosing your magic is, in terms of the game, a huge deal compared to fighting styles or weapons.
Have you considered that they were the only tester to find it, not because of the rarity itself, but because of the journey and our current level cap? That’s all it is, that’s the difficulty of it, and you have to consider that we don’t have all of our tools for these things. Hecate is the God of Magic, surely we can sense Hecate Essence when sensing gets added; therein being a feature to save us time looking for it.
These are valid, if you don’t like how something is then suggest for tools to alleviate the process of getting it or future usage of it. Like I said in another post, sensing for magic users could detect it. As the level cap increases we’ll get faster and more powerful ships. Now suggest ways to better reach the Far Reaches, or find Hecate Essence itself. Hell, you could suggest that luck could increase the chances of it spawning on an island.
After all, islands are procedurally generated based on the player.
A player who picks fire magic is eventually going to get tired of throwing fireballs.
Consider gameplay before anything else.
Lore argument. Irrelevant.
Yes, I did, all of these things suck in relation to essence!
It also doesn’t change my point at all, if he’s the only tester throughout testing to find it, then he should have come to the conclusion that its difficult enough as it is.
I have already suggested these things.
I’m going to be completely honest with you, you just got alot harder to take seriously because you just told me you prioritize lore over gameplay.
this is literally one of the primary reasons we should be able to change it (specifically because of new players)
sure but ive never seen a game where backing out of a choice means grinding over the course of multiple real life days
and im frankly really glad i havent
also typically “hard/impossible to back out of choices” in games have major impact on the game’s narrative or world meanwhile this is a single attack method
You can say “magic is a core part of your character” all you want but nothing in-game differentiates it in that way from weapons and fighting styles, if something is planned for that in the future then sure but until then no
this would actually help significantly though i think the base rates are still too high
the funny thing is even though youre using it as a defense for current hecate essence, this would genuinely be better design and gameplay than what it is right now
Mages have other magics, and we’re getting more spells. Blast right now just so happens to be a bread and butter spell.
Lore as an argument is usually never irrelevant. But by all means, argue that lore doesn’t really matter here. That usually leads to nonsense and inconsistencies.
Yes, it is difficult, but we aren’t even supposed to be in insanity 2, let alone the Far Reaches. The insanity 1 layer has a recommended level of 120 in the trello. So I understand if most of the testers probably died trying to get to the Far Reaches to Atlanteans and the like. The Dark Sea is dangerous, it’s not an easy journey.
That’s fine, it’s not like lore and gameplay aren’t typically tied together. But by all means, argue against lore as a valid reason.
i think youre misunderstanding what the issue actually is
the goal in tying together lore and gameplay is to make them actually complement one another, work well together, have the lore amplify the gameplay, etc.
all of this is the opposite of what hecate essence is
Hecate essence is using the lore as an excuse for poor gameplay
New players have a free stat reset. If they don’t like magic they can try another build.
This is solely because we aren’t meant to be there yet. You ever fight an enemy that’s way too high of a level before? Sure, maybe with skill you can kill it, but it’d be a helluva lot easier later at a higher level.
Fair point, magic thus far hasn’t had that kind of role placed on it yet (in terms of choice at least). I doubt it will since there’s too many to account for.
If something’s planned then it makes no sense to do a change to something only to revert it later. Although when it comes to Hecate Essence it doesn’t really affect magic beyond it’s identity (which is important).
Hecate essence exists in a state where the Dark Sea is designed around the Insanity 1 layer, with no further content beyond that except for JUST the essence itself. The reason Hecate essence partly sucks so much is probably due to the lack of content in the Dark Sea beyond the intended layer.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again:
I could be level infinity and oneshot every atlantean and Hecate Essence would still be a massive slog to search for.
this is just ignoring the actual problem, also its “they dont like their magic” not magic itself
you are talking about an entirely different thing rn
people do not fight the atlanteans even if it was a guaranteed kill theyre a massive waste of time
i wasnt implying that any hecate essence changes should be reverted upon any future changes like that. I was saying that if any changes that would make magic more of a core character aspect gameplay-wise happened then id understand that specific part
this isnt even related to what i said i also dont understand what lack of unique far reaches content rn has to do with this
If you want to argue that then go ahead, but the game isn’t done yet. There’ll be plenty of spells in the future to choose from, but if you want to argue about being tired of seeing the same vfx then sure I guess.
We aren’t supposed to even be in the Far Reaches anyways, so anything related to Hecate essence or the Far Reaches is recycled insanity 1 content but scaled up.
Yes, because of the journey and the fact we don’t even have basic features like sensing. Again, something like sensing I’m sure could improve the whole search tremendously since it’d let you pinpoint where the essence is without even needing to visually see the essence itself.
ok how long are you planning to keep up being passive aggressive?
listen man, there’s only so long until a person wants a change of scenery.
It doesn’t matter if its a fireball, a meteor, a fire beam, a fire elemental, a fire pulsar, a fire whatever else, its still fire.
eventually they’re going to want to do something else.
