Could also be a situation of “we’ll take whoever has the most influence and power since we need to get this done, whether or not they’re a good person.” I just think it’s more interesting than them saving the world so they can rule it.
That is already the reason the scenario can’t work, because their higher ranks would just be filled with similar people, making the corruption even more imminent.
Also, Calvus was child when he was indoctrinated into the Order, and came out corrupt and discriminatory, so that just speak volumes on what kind of group the Order is.
have you considered that it might just be a ravenna noble thing?
Yes, I can’t believe a king of a nation which neglected one of its cities so hard it’s permanently turned into slums, carried out a genocide against a neighboring nation that literally forced several other nations to band together to stop them and is actively carrying out witch hunts of anyone thought to be related to that nation or even knows about it and imprisons them to slave away in the mines for as long as they live would become corrupted and evil when the Order came into contact with him. They’re truly mortifying!
This was done and started by Nero.
This was mainly carried out under Octavius.
Calvus was literally a child when the Order took him in, so I assume he had a pretty clean slate. The fact this “trying to save the world” group of people, took in a child, made him as corrupt as his predecessors, and then made him a High Lord, is already proof that the Order also has to be inherently corrupt itself, and the “ends justify the means” ideology doesn’t really work here.
That’s kind of the point, they know what their doing so it’s not mortifying to them, they’re evil.
It could quite literally be a thing for every High Lord or Baron, that is an influential figure in a Sea.
Also, Jorund is a Order Baron, and he isn’t a Ravenna noble. Pretty interesting how it’s always the clearly evil people that are turning out to be the Order’s higher ranking members.
nvm yeah it’s vetex’s writing so I wouldn’t be surprised
I don’t know man, for a group that’s introduced to do the most inhuman experiments on people they kidnap at the very start of the game, to be evil feels like the most go to thing a writer should be doing.
actually I wanted to argue that it’s never been stated ingame that the order was the one doing the experiments but our character just assumes they did when talking to ren??
how would they even know? they don’t remember anything from it. morden doesn’t tell them it’s the order. the closest they could get to this is calvus saying the order is looking for people like the mc, which idk seems too vague to make that sort of leap
is it just a plot hole??
For a secret group that’s introduced as so underground one of the oldest and most informed characters in the verse thinks they stopped existing long ago, you’d think they wouldn’t look for their members among people who are obviously evil and have literal bounties
Sure, even if Calvus failed to pass as a good king, few would suspect him to be part of a seemingly long gone group
But if you’re giving the second highest rank to the most wanted person in the sea that will likely constantly be plagued by the navy and bounty hunters, that’s a big risk you’re taking
Yes, I’m sure all the nobles who certainly made a very big stir around his ancestor’s crimes had absolutely no hand in influencing the young and vulnerable heir
After defeating calvus Silas says that he was experimented on by a group and calvus responds that the order must have got him before.
I’m pretty sure that’s the closest thing to a confirmation we can get.
Oh and morden remembers the orders symbole too so ye
youre assuming they corrupted him, rather than his father and all of the other nobles
him being made a high lord is irrelevant to the argument as well, that was just because he ruled over nearly an entire sea, so he has great influence so obviously he’ll be made one of the highlords
we dont assume they did something to us originally i dont think, but since we are the cliche hero who believes in righteousness we decide to investigate the group
then like 2 days later we get to sailor’s lodge and morden says this
“They were going south from the Stepstones when I last saw them, towards Fort Talos. I decided to follow them because I saw a symbol on their ship that seemed… oddly familiar to me.”
“A while ago at Palo Town, I saw a small ship sailing out of the fog of the Stepstones, which I thought was odd. After I looked at it through a spyglass, I saw their symbol. I immediately recognized it, but I’m not sure where I’ve seen it before…”
then the calvus stuff too that was already mentioned
Maybe Barons are more replaceable and are expected to die once in a while, while High Lords are the true influential power holders in the group. If one strong Pirate dies, you can employ a new one; If one general of a kingdom dies, you can employ another; But the same can’t be said about a High Lord who’s also the ruler of a nation, who already has a lot of power and might not have that big of an incentive to join the Order (considering they literally had to groom Calvus into being loyal to the Order). As long as they have that, they can easily have a general be a Baron who’d do it out of loyalty for their ruler, or a independent power hungry criminal who would take the opportunity more easily.
Calvus himself literally credits the Order with teaching him everything, so it’s likely that they had the biggest hand in Calvus’s growth. Calvus also likely in his early teens when he joined the Order, meaning he spent way longer with the Order than with whatever noble was influencing him (except maybe Argos, who’s also coincidentally a part of the Order).
The nobles influenced the kid argument would work if Calvus was solely raised by the royal family, but if a third-party that are apparently “trying to save the world” gets involved, and the child grows up the same but now with more power, then either the Order is too passive, too irresponsible, outright doesn’t give a shit, or isn’t really trying to "save the world at all! Consequently, all of them lead to them not really saving the world.
oh yeah I’m stupid ![]()
I think it’s kinda lame that it’s just pretty much confirmed in the first area though
wouldn’t it be so much more interesting if it was just a little thingy you keep in the back of your mind and only have it be revealed a bit later?
does the game even have any story mysteries anymore?
if the aberration is fixable or if we’ll have to put her down
Trust id fix her no matter what ![]()
I wouldn’t count the aberration as part of the main story yet. They’ve been mentioned only once by one guy.
sure, they’re always there when you use your sensing, but how is that any different from just having a billboard that says “Look, I’m the big bad evil guy at the end of the game! And I’m purple btw”
About the Scorch Curse; I had asked vetex about whether or not we’ll ever get to have any information on the 5th and final unnamed Sea Cluster. There was no response. But I’m pretty sure that’s where the Scorch Curse resides if it is owned; a single sea cluster having TWO GFC users would be catastrophic so I’d imagine the unnamed sea cluster houses the Scorch Curse.
how is the big bad evil guy at the end of the game not part of the story
