Def agreed there, school introduces us to things we might like later on
School really just needs to be more considerate of studentsâ mental health because that just gets thrown out the window.
I know a school a friend of mine goes to thatâs infamous for destroying studentâs mental health to the point that they are pushed toâŚI rather not say here. This is caused by a mix of the school and the pressure from the parents (the area is made up of east-asians, infamous for their hard discipline on children), as well as the competition for jobs.
Just finished my LA report, I stuttered and repeated stuff and everything sucked bc I procrastinated until the last minute but thank the heavens itâs over
Why not make school project based with the removal of a grading system and instead we get feedback. Instead, we would have to cooperate with businesses so we would learn things that are actually useful.
With the current school system there are some children going into major depression (thereâs even deaths due to this, look at some countries).
I like how most teachers at school is telling you about how to get ready for life but all you really need is life is to know how to read and write even normal addition, subtraction, multiplication, division because you need to know how much youâll have and how much youâll have after spending it, and how to get a job unless you do something like Social Media memes/songs but when they start putting letters in math and some science you really donât need that in everyday life
school should be absolutely 100% optional PERIOD and each individual class should be 100% optional PERIOD. you cannot just FORCE people to do stuff people have something called âfree willâ ever heard of it STU-PID (okay I am calling the so-called âpublic schoolsâ stupid not any of you fabulous people) public school is just a straight up prison forcing this and that. dragging people out of bed forcing them with the threat of straight up kidnapping (my parents apparently had to go to court years ago because I says in the most mocking tone imaginable âmissed too much schoolâ. (okay edit for the court bit here I just asked my dear and fabulous mother and there was did not go to court some people came to our house and some school people because of missing too much school (she DID say it could have come to that though (dealing with having to go to court) I had to go to school even if I was sick because of the oh so thin ice and I got sick a LOT because ofâŚwellâŚlook it was pretty much hammered into my head that you write your name on this so that we know where to find you if say like a fire happens. And since I KNEW that school shootings are a very real possibility and the fact that we were told that if someone DID attack the school that all the doors to the classrooms and such would get locked and they would STAY that way (they sure made absolutely certain to let us all know that.) meaning that if you were out of a classroom for any reason whatsoever and didnât get back inside in time that you would be STUCK outside meaning that I was oh so terrified of using the bathroom so I would just wind up just holding it inâŚand inâŚand in some more until I got home. Therefore I got urinary tract infections on an oh so regular basis even eventually I guess becoming rather immune to at lest one medication or something.)) Oh and fun fact: public schools just completely break laws for example: you know school shootings yeah? Well child endangerment is a crime and school shootings are a known and absolutely horrid thing to happen and the (I know this isnât with all so-called public schools (an uncle of mine is a principle of a (again so-called public school and he is not allowed to ask if anyone (at least the staff anyway) if the have a gun)) have these absolutely STUPID âno gun zoneâ âno weapon zoneâ stuff like THAT! You think thatâs gonna stop anyone from shooting up the school? NO! All that stuff really does is paint a target sign on its back, âhey look a school to attack welp Iâm off to go shoot some people now hahaha!â âWhat about all those people? There are adults there someoneâs bound to have a gun.â âhahaha naw they have a no weapons sign so theyâre all just a bunch of sitting ducks.â âOkay then have fun!â They really are⌠Homework, ahhh homework (now not ALL schools in the world have homework (Finland apparently has none) but tons (at least in the US DO and itâs just straight up slave labour) is SLAVE LABOUR! I really wanna know just which IDIOT decided to come up with this GARBAGE! And who on EARTH decided to make it so children below 16 cannot get a job yet SIMENTANOUSLY force school? If I ever have children (which if I get married I most certainly will) the absolute last thing that I will ever do to them is enslave them. You know if I ever became a teacher at a so-called âpublic schoolâ aka prison then I would have a very very high temptation to just call everyone a certain name (donât wanna say it but itâs the name of a fictional character who has had a particular lack of freedom since like 8) for two reasons 1 there is this particular running joke with there being a bunch of him and two because I might as well for all the freedom and individuality they get.
Can you make this a drop down
Schoolâs effects on people is a topic that intrigues me. Iâm at the end of the ladder, iâm done, but college is the next step for me. You guys have so many different opinions and backgrounds, and Iâve read/skimmed everyoneâs replies.
But thereâs one thing that everyone agrees on: The system is old, flawed, and has not changed.
Not saying it doesnât work. It does itâs job, teaches you how to read and write + other knowledge and some social skills, and produces âproductive members of societyâ who will work 5 to 9 jobs and then die.
Me personally iâm doing well in school (I go to a public one), but I absolutely understand why school receives the heat that it gets, itâs not for everyone.
(srry that each topic is like an essay, but iâm really passionate about this topic)
Mainly for these reasons:
Mental Health
Probably the biggest one.
I cannot speak for everyone here because I never had any serious mental health issues in school, but man school can really bring out the worst in people. This is not a factor until middle school, where I was culture shocked because everyone was overly rude to one another. I will not name the schools I attend, but there was almost a fight every.single.day.
There are people who will make it their lifeâs mission to see you get angry, why? idk. But they do it, non stop, incessantly. I know first hand as I used to have anger issues and be bullied. Middle school is also where social media starts to play a bigger role.
Now I donât use social media like that (except for youtube) but Iâm not going to go all boomer on you and say âSociAl mEdia BaD bUk GuDâ. But I will say that when you start comparing yourself to other people in school, you will feel weak, insecure, and justâŚlesser. Social anxiety is real, and while I donât have this issue (iâm an ambivert), there were times where I felt isolated and alienated because I thought I wasnât cool enough to hang out with such and such and that they wouldnât like me. Weâve all thought things like âAm I good enough?â âAm I cool enough?â âAm I smart enough?â and 99% of the time, school is going to say no and that gets to us.
Iâve covered the people, now for the work. I donât like work, I donât think anyone here does, yet I know that work is a part of life. Starts off good and then oh shoot I have a project due tomorrow, oh wait, that essay is due TODAY??, and it just gets worse from there. Some students just donât handle that kind of stress well, and then theyâŚdo things that I canât say on the forum. And then lets say little jimmy has a question on his math homework that he doesnât understand, but heâs afraid of asking the teacher out of fear of sounding dumb and being ridiculed by the teacher and his classmates for not knowing. This goes for answering questions as well.
Then he takes a leap of faith, asks the question, and then gets laughed at by the entire class!
This sort of thing is trivial grades 8 and up, but to a kid? Oh thatâs devastating. That kind of embarrassment will stick with them for a while and will affect their future decisions to ask and answer questions, for fear of negative public opinion.
Lack Of Autonomy
Other than managing your time effectively to complete your assignments, School does not teach you how to function on your own.
This is something thatâs mostly self-taught. Everyday (pre-corona), your life would be governed by bells. Once you get in class, shut up, sit down, take out your books, turn to page 35624897032543897432. Now none of my classes are like that, but unfortunately, some are. Once youâre in the classroom, more often than not, youâre a robot now! Donât speak unless spoken too, if you want to speak then raise your hand! If I see your phone I will TAKE IT, BURN IT, CALL YOUR PARENTS, SEND YOU TO DETENTION, AND TALK TO YOU IN CAPS. DO YOU UNDERSTAND?
Nobody wants to hear any of that coming from anyone. Just makes people angry.
As I mentioned in the beginning, school can help you develop time management skills to complete assignments, but school runs for so long that itâs essentially your life, lasting for 6-7 hours. 8 if youâre unlucky, but 6 in my case. It doesnât give anyone time to do anything other than go home, do homework, pack lunch, get ready for tmrr, the end. Every minute is tightly controlled by the system, making kids feel as if they have no control over their lives.
Huge Emphasis On Academic Achievement
There is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to do your best, being the greatest you can be, and achieving things. But school hammers this down into the very souls of itâs students. Itâs as if school is trying to make you think that your purpose is to achieve, which isnât true, your purpose is to live. Club this, club that, student council this, distinct educators of that, national junior society of scholarly stfu.
Clubs are cool, and they can help you get that extra social interaction that you just donât get in normal school. But that doesnât mean I have to participate in all of them. They also make it look as if youâre introverted if you donât participate. Colleges and scholarships will also look at these and they often make or break your selection if the essay/transcript doesnât.
School puts the alphabet on your work to measure your competence/intelligence. If you get an A, youâre an amazing ultra super mega smart kid! If you get an F, youâre a failiure!
None of these letters mean a thing after school is over <---- This is coming from a student that almost always gets Aâs and Bâs. Even the people who get Fâs can still succeed at life (not saying you should go get Fâs, donât, just hurts your transcript and school career)
When I graduate from H.S (which is very soon) No one except for my college and family will remember, see, or even care that iâm an A-B student who took some AP classes. Yes this will help me in the long run for my chosen career pathway, and iâm not complaining. However, not everyone was built for this. Some people will want to learn a trade, join the army, or go straight to work when they complete H.S.
But these interests are mostly brushed over. âNo you canât live your life that way! Youâre supposed to go to elementary > Middle > High > College > Job!!!â.
And then, thereâs the College BoardâŚ
school has some use but generally is still shit
reading/writing, basic maths, and a sembelance of common sense
but who the fuck will ever use geometry, calculus, learning how to read shakespearean media, and other topics past middle school outside of specialized fields in real life
While the system is flawed, school entirely should not optional. Every member of society should have a basic education up to some point that teaches them the core, basic knowledge that is needed in life. Past that, which would probably be elementary, school should start allowing students more choice in what classes they take, allowing themselves to cultivate towards a certain field of study.
uh oh, wall of text
hurts my eyes attempting to read through this
The Great Wall of Text
I just canât wait for colleges to make College Board irrelevant, just like California.
Figured out how to do the hide details thingamajig
Just responding to @SavageWind 's points
Mental Health
I mostly agree with these statements. In middle school, a lot of people were constantly on snapchat or tiktok or something. I want to add that for people that have neurological differences, such as me with ADHD and autism, school can be extremely hard as in my experience, everything can seem hard. This can also come as a blessing, as the social comparison factor was mostly removed. The problem is, most people didnât know how to deal with an autistic middle schooler. As such, I had few friends, but luckily they were good friends. More on-topic, I would often be going to the office in tears since something would happen and nobody knew how to de-escalate a sobbing autistic kid. This can lead to and things happening. Bottom line: It sucks being in middle school with autism. As to the asking a question, that still happens for me even in high school. With zoom especially, if I ask a question in a dm some of my teachers will read it aloud to the entire class and then answer it. The teachers arenât bad, but the problem is it feels like everyone is going to think itâs a dumb question. So basically, I agree. And for homework, at this point it is kind of not stressing for me, for a bad reason. Once it piled up enough, I sort of just stopped doing it. Now this isnât good, and it has stolen many weekends from me. While I was still doing it, it badly damaged my mental health due to the stress of handling everything.
TBC bc life sucks
