I feel like you’re making a major logical error in assuming that the gods… were actually liked? People didn’t worship the gods because they’re enamoured by some perfect creator who loves all of humanity, they did it cause it might stop them from killing their entire herd of cattle. The gods were kind of assholes, no tears would be shed to them dying. You mention some atheist bias in the storytelling making the gods pretty irrelevant, but are you sure you’re not biased yourself based off modern religion?
i can’t say exactly how it is in ao but gods are regarded as nature itself which you cannot kill. like lightning for example. arthur could say zeus is dead people would look up when lightning strikes and say “no zeus is not dead. there he is” because zeus is lightning itself
i don’t think humans can get on the level of gods as humans unlike gods are extremely limited. even curse users. like if they touch the sea they’re dead lol and humans can’t grant you things. you can’t sacrifice a goat to arthur and he’ll bless your crops. only demeter could do that. the reason for worship is a. reverence and praise and being thankful for what the gods have given you and b. asking the gods for help in your everyday life by giving them gifts. it’s the cycle of gift giving. you give something so you get something in return
this is just not even true as the ancient greeks did not view the gods in a negative way and would never speak ill of them no matter what. zeus was especially revered and worshipped by nearly everybody everywhere and had the most grand temples build (temple of zeus in olympia for example). people in ao would never even dare have a negative thought about the gods as that would be hubris

that’s just not true at all lol. the gods are not gonna kill your entire family because you didn’t pray on monday and make an offering. unlike yahweh (as he’s often portrayed) the gods do not care that much. they are not petty in that way and are too busy with their own problems to care unless someone actually insults them or is a dick to them. like they help people because they get gifts. demeter wouldn’t bless your crops just because you nicely said “please demeter” no she’d expect something in return like a pig or a piece of bread or a flower. and even if you prayed without an offering she’d just ignore it as she won’t go out of her way to punish anybody for something idiotic.
basically the gods were not worshipped out of fear because even if you didn’t worship nothing bad would happen to you and you wouldn’t burn. this idea that people have is purely Christian and has no place in hellenic religion and makes no sense
why would people not like the gods? they have given them everything. even in ao one of the ghosts said “who were we to bite the hand that feeds us?” clearly showing reverence and guilt ofc as they should. in ancient Greece no one hated zeus for his myths and even if mythology actually happened in ao I’m sure people wouldn’t exactly know of it and couldn’t verify it. also gods are not comparable to human morals as they aren’t human and are beyond human morals which is why the incest is not something vile and disgusting as gods are not human and they don’t have DNA and their relationships are completely different and trying to apply human morals to mythical beings doesn’t really work imo
