The Art of Learning
I’m not ready to mutate yet. I’m far from it, I’d need at least a few more years of training and some traumatic event to trigger it. However, my Wind Magic is a bit lacklustre these days, and with the threat of Keraxe ever closer, I think I should learn something new. I’ve heard from a powerful Mage who passed through Amarut a few days ago that learning a second, or even third magic is nothing like learning the first. Most Mages, that is people with the born right to use magic, will learn their first Magic very young, and even if it is learnt later in life, it feels like a new part of your mind has opened to new ideas. I got Wind at a very very young age and I can’t quite remember what it feels like. An Alchemist travelling with the Mage said he recently unlocked the ability to wield Snow Magic, and that it was a really refreshing feeling.
Technically he could wield magic before anyway, through Enchanting Magic, but from what I can tell, Enchanting Magic works a bit differently to the other Magic types, most get it via hard work and studying the art of Magic Energy Manipulation in complex ways rather than it being passed through bloodlines or mutating a magic they already know. I can’t say I really understand the difference but I’m sure it matters to some.
The Mage said they recently unlocked their Water Magic. They had been practising adjusting the intent and shape of their spells for a while before that to no avail, but after talking to a certain person, it pushed their abilities just enough over the edge to use this new type. I wish I could talk to this person, but the Mage refused to tell me who it was. They were a bit weird, I don’t know why they wouldn’t tell me their saviour’s identity. Must have been some sort of Oracle or Sage from where they came. Not like it could have been an Ancient God or someone.
Oh well, I mean I’ve been trying to learn something new in similar ways but if it didn’t work for the Mage, I don’t see it working for me.
I did a bit of research while in Caitara, they have a pretty big library there. One of my Great Grandfathers on my mother’s side was a pretty well renowned Commander in the Samerian Fleet. He once met the Empress herself! Anyway, he was famed for using Sand Magic which back then was much rarer than it is today, and you basically had to Mutate something else into it if you wanted to use it. He wasn’t the progenitor of it, that was some guy from Ancient Times or whenever called… Ahmose I think. I’m sure I heard that some historian friend of General Nasir found some ancient scripts in the Scorching Dunes which detailed it. It’s quite funny that although he must have lived in such a different world, parts of his story remain here in our sands…
I kinda wish Nasir wasn’t so busy over near Rosehenge and Fort Montu. That’s way too far to go. I like Nasir, he always comes to Amarut to bring treats for the kids, and has some great stories.
He has a son, don’t you know. Takes after his father, a Healing Mage. Also, he uses metal from what I’ve heard. I want to meet him, perhaps he has some more stories. I like a good story.
Back to the point, I think that potentially, if I’m lucky, some of that Sand Magic ability latent within me. I’m sure if I go back further there’ll be all kinds of Magic that I could potentially use but, Sand seems fitting somehow. Sand. Sand. Gets everywhere but I love it. Hate storms though. Always hate storms.
I’ll keep trying, I guess.
Oh great, Liz just dropped the vase. Got to clean that up. Again.
I mean… I could just blow some sand in people’s faces. But what happens if I’m at sea? Do I just have to take a bit of Sameria with me? I think it would just be better to learn Sand Magic myself at that point. More effort in the short term but more blinding in the long term. Just how I like it. Probably.
Liz just dropped another vase.
Again.
How the hell does she do it so much? We only own three.
