Randomness' AO Interpretations

Intro

Hi there! It’s quite a popular trend on the forums for people who build stuff in studio to showcase their stuff in a topic. I’m not the best builder, I’ve built a total of 1 proper island which even then could be expanded upon. I’ve tried to design characters and I think some of them are decent - not on the level of JTN and Debyl but I’m proud of them. What I do sometimes do is write, oftentimes from the perspective of a Grand Navy Vice Admiral. Something I enjoy doing is thinking of things that for all I know might be skipped over entirely in AO, for example, who processes the assassination requests for the Syndicate, how is the navy organised, how do they identify criminals?

What ways could a Curse User fight that most… wouldn’t fight in, how are Sea Curses transported? All of these silly little questions I try to answer with snippets of my lore interpretations.

They are just that, lore interpretations. Most of them have no basis in actual AO lore and are just neat little ideas which could work, but who really knows?

Characters

Admiral Palomedes Torres, The Titan

image
First character I designed, slightly reworked. Not a huge fan and I don’t think I’ll be improving it. He’s tall.

Admiral Stanford Locke, The Silent

Sound Curse
image
image
He’s simple but I like him.

Admiral Aira Verdi, The Navy’s Wind

Wind Curse
image
image
In my opinion, my best design. She’s the pride and joy of the Grand Navy, and is both armoured like it and acts like it.

Admiral XXX Vitus, The Rising

image
I don’t think I finalised a name, but here’s a really unpolished concept for a Phoenix Magic user.

Unfinished King Admiral Robin Adkins

Phlegethon Curse
image
Based off of the Rear Admiral Adkins image, definitely not finished although I don’t know what to add. I thought it would be hilarious if the King Admiral, arch enemy of every pirate in the War Seas , just looked like a pretty normal guy in a suit though.

Rear Admiral Elane Adkins, The Daughter

image
King Admiral’s daughter. Uses water, gold and heat magics. Ranked at Rear Admiral but works in the Office of High Command.

Paratiritis

The elite force of the Grand Navy. Highly trained Oracles who are officially unranked and divisionless. They are used to identify criminals.
Uniquely, they have sea green spirit energy and use Orbs of Theia, a type of Spirit Weapon which somehow the Grand Navy have in relatively large supply considering the rarity of Spirit Weapons in the first place.

Metaforéas

image
Slaves or prisoners who have had their eyes removed, and are restrained in high grade handcuffs. They are used to transport Curses under the idea that Devourer Blades are difficult and expensive to forge, and its very unlikely anybody can procure hundreds, and even less likely they’re willing to waste the valuable weapons on potentially curseless individuals. The trade or use of Metaforéas is one of the worst crimes committable under the Grand Navy and they make a large attempt to stop it occurring.

Vice Admiral Cain, The Shade of The Fallen

image
image
Guardian of Risenheir Bay and CO of the Office of Human Loss. Vice Admiral Cain protects the fallen Navy soldier’s resting place.
There are rumors - just rumours that Cain is an extremely strong Mage, having mutated his Shadow Magic into both Equinox and Death. He will however, never enter combat as that will leave Risenheir Bay vulnerable.

Every single soldier killed in the line of duty of the Navy will have their death reports written and signed personally by Cain.

He would live forever if it means the Dead rest forever.

Ideas

“Risenheir Bay”

A large, flat island of sand dunes with a long and wide beach that stretches across one side. The burial place of fallen Grand Navy Soldiers. Inspired by Holkham Bay, Norfolk.

“Offices”

See

Grand Navy Report - Offices of the Navy

“Headquarters”

The Astoria Kingdom used to have its capital on a large mountainous island. Since its transformation into the Grand Navy, they have hollowed out much of the inside of the mountain. One side has a giant dock where massive ships such as Oceanus and The Lord’s Regime can stay, and tunnels throughout the mountain provide plenty of hidden spaces for offices and the like. Mostly inspired by the Dwaven cities of the Inheritance Cycle, along with Farthen Dur, also Inheritance Cycle.

Magic Concepts

A few concepts for Magic types. Most of which aren’t serious and are just fun little ideas.

Styx

“An Ancient Magic which allows the user to summon cold, deadly water. Causes all those who come into contact with it to feel a sense of overwhelming dread. Named after a river in the Underworld.”
Visuals:
Dark grey water which pulsates with a dark energy. Leaves puddles.
Effect:
“Dread” - Obscures vision with dark effects and causes low DoT for a middling period of time.

Acheron

“An Ancient Magic which allows the user to summon a liquid imbued with a corrupt energy. Named after a river in the Underworld, and forever haunted with its name.”
Visuals:
A dark purple energy in the form of a liquid. Similar somewhat to Darkness. Leaves puddles.
Effect:
“Woe” - Weakens opponents who are hit. They will deal reduced damage while this effect is active.

Phlegethon

“An Ancient Magic which allows the user to summon liquid fire which sticks to their opponents. Causes all who come into contact with it to burn with agony. Named after a river in the Underworld.”
Visuals:
Bright orange/red burning liquid.
Effect:
“Agony” - Causes the opponent to take large amounts of DoT for a long time.

  • Could also be a Grand Fire Magic, it fits the category.

Cocytus

“An Ancient Magic which allows the user to summon semi frozen crystals of liquid which pierce their opponents. Causes all who come into contact with it to slowly freeze. Named after a river in the Underworld.”
Visuals:
Black ice crystals outlined with striking pale blue effects.
Effect:
“Lamentation” - Causes the opponent to gradually slow down over the course of the effect. Also obscures the screen slightly.

Lethe

“An Ancient Magic which allows the user to summon clear liquid which causes forgetfulness in those who touch it. Named after a river in the Underworld.”
Visuals:
Clear crystalline liquid.
Effect:
Amnesia - While under this effect, the opponent will have their screen obscured and will “Forget” how to use some of their abilities. This will cause the abilities to either fail or deal little damage, along with being marked with fog like effects.

also is the punishment for using curse couriers like instant public execution or something

I mean I doubt it’ll be instant execution but you’d be up for a pretty bad sentence if you were orchestrating it. I’d imagine the law is pretty hard to uphold similar to the genocide one, the Navy would have to directly interfere with Kingdom Affairs if it happened within one.

I wonder if there’s ever been any kingdoms that’s tried to rebel against the navy

like they don’t want to allow the navy to intervene even though they’re committing terrible crimes technically

Note:
I’ve just finished reading the AA webcomic by Sheep. I think it’s pretty good. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realise that mystery teacher man was freedrock :sob:. It just clicked when he appeared in the Fifth Sea. The exact same thing happened with Coconut. Literally the chapter before her identity revealed I realised…

It gave me quite a few inspirations for writing and stuff.

Also, it’s a complete coincidence that Admiral Silias and Locke share a title. Although there is some irony behind it.
Two sides of the world. Two peacekeepers. Two goals. One identity.

I have another thing I’m writing. Hopefully you like it.

put admiral locke in a maid dress… NOW!!! :smirk_cat:

My current project is a longer writing piece detailing an interpretation of a possible end to AO’s storyline. I’m trying to do something with it but I’m not sure how obvious it will be.

Excerpt from The End to The End
The Commodore meets The Deserter

The sea around The Pillar rose high above the deck of The Lantern, and those on board were surprised that they hadn’t been thrown off by the aggressive waters. Docked by the supermassive structure were three large ships. They appeared to be fully manned by a large crew, firing outwards. Surrounding them was a graveyard of shipwrecks, ripped apart by cannons. One ship was larger than the others, significantly so. Larger than The Lantern definitely. They stopped firing as the small Navy group came closer, there was no doubt that their targets were these strange unmarked vessels which seemed to appear in swathes.
On the upper deck of the largest vessel, stood a tall and bearded man wearing a grey hood and purplish armour. He was armed, with a cutlass and a few flintlock pistols and -

A marine called out. “Commodore? Are they enemies?”

  • “Damn… I recognise the man up on that ship there. He’s a deserter from one of Commodore Kai’s divisions back in the Bronze Sea. I was sent to kill him a while back after he raided Silverhold with some Mag-”
In sudden realisation, Splint grabbed the hilt of Tyflóslepída, “I’m beginning to distrust this Mage figure even more.”

“Hold fire!”
Kenton shouted. “Enizor, where are you? Get over here. The Navy has arrived!”
The old man smiled and sauntered out of the cabin where he was resting, “Good, that will scare off the Order ships for now. There’s an Admiral on board, I recognise the magic imprint. We- Well, Geno and I have met them before.”

“The Lantern huh? Commodore Splint that b-”
“Edward. No hard feelings.”

There seemed to be a ring around, right up against the Pillar, where the water grew calmer again, as if by passing the storm around it you were worthy of its might. The Lantern anchored a short way away from them, and a few rowboats came over. The Admiral was not part of this meeting crew, and seemed to be waiting back. They navigated past a splintered mast from a sunken Order brig and came to board.

“Soo… Commodore Splint, you’ve finally found me.”
“I abandoned that mission years ago Kenton, I have better things to do than chase a random deserter… but, I will admit. I had hoped this talk would be on the day of your execution.”
The two men, begrudgingly, shook hands.
“Why so angry?”
“Oh, you and that friend of yours just hurt someone I knew during your raid. Revenge was necessary.”
“One grudge to hold…”
