Useless Facts Thread

i would rather be thrown feet-first into a woodchipper

alr bet

I don’t think I can maintain the daily facts anymore

I’ve started to run out of things that I truly find interesting, and I can only find so much on WP:UA without resorting to female standing urination devices

Therefore, I will no longer post a fact on a daily basis, nor will I continue the stupid, somewhat unspoken rule that no one other than myself may post facts

tl;dr I’m pretty much out of ideas and everyone else can post facts here now

That said, the binomial name for the blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) may be a pun. “Musculus” can be used to refer to a mouse.

There’s a gene in humans named after Pikachu. There we go, first useless fact not made by sol.

what exactly is considered a useless fact

is “orcas are smart enough that each pods basically have their own language (or rather, dialect might be the more correct term)” useless fact?

a fact that will not bring any major benefit to the person who knows it, so yes that would be a useless fact

what if they are an orca reading that, tho

There is a National Hot Dog and Sausage Council (NHDSC) that acts as a primary authority over the creation and consumption of Hot Dogs and Sausages as well as social etiquette to follow while during consumption.

still useless, no?

like if you told me “hey people in china speak a different language from you” it wouldnt really do anything for me

i mean, knowing people in my own country from different regions speak different dialects was certainly useful cuz else kid me would have been really confused otherwise, since some regions have dialect so different from what im used to i practically cant hear anything they’re saying, even though they are speaking the same language as me

the longest anyone has ever lived is 122 years and 164 days, achieved by jeanne calment, born february 21st 1875 and died august 4th 1997

its possible that cats kneading something is a habit carried over from when they were kittens as those are observed to do so to stimulate the milk glands of their mothers

it might also be a way for cat to expression affection to you, similar to how they show their belly as a sign of trust

Rhodium[1][2] has been found in potatoes. There’s not a lot; around 0.8 to 3 ppt[3]

  1. 45Rh, one of the rarest elements in Earth’s crust at less than one part per billion ↩︎

  2. It’s mainly used in catalytic converters along with other rare elements like palladium and platinum which is why they’re so goddamn expensive and also why people steal them ↩︎

  3. Parts per trillion. For every trillion atoms in the sample, there’s on average between 0.8 and 3 rhodium atoms ↩︎
