I honestly feel that the grand fire concept was done away with, but Vetex kept the magics/curses themselves as normal ones rather than special promethean ones
Correct me if I’m wrong but as far as I know the only mention of the grand fire concept in official material outside of discord messages (I don’t have patreon so idk if he’s said anything about it there) right now is the lore doc and in-game arcane chronicles, both of which are outdated since they still refer to blessings as experimental curses
Not to mention the grand fire concept has ZERO impact on AO’s story since Arthur was on the other side of the world and has been dead for a few months by the time it starts. Hell it didn’t even really impact AA’s story and Arthur was alive and well there. So I definitely could see him just retconning the concept as a whole, he already got rid of Promethean flame since he thought it would too ridiculous and OP that Prometheus would imbue his godly flame into a curse

Wait, are curses called that for that reason? I don’t think 90% of curse users care that someone close to them is going to die. There are good users like Empress Nillan, but wouldn’t it be enough to just get another curse and give it to family member, like Wotan and his son? (I know it sounds easy when you put it like that, but it’s still a solution)… I thought it was a curse because nature hated them.
Speaking of the topic, it’s funny to think that every spell (created by Prometheus) has a curse… there are so many lost and basic magics that it makes it seem like there are many more curse users than there actually are. Maybe not all of them have actually been collected. Anyway, it’s quite interesting that other magcics can also considered lost, for example, is Equinox a lost or ancient magic?
Technically, it says curses have varying power. It could be a lost magic juiced up by Prometheus when it was made into a curse?
If the grand fires were nerfed because of complexity compared to the base magics[1]; then I could reasonably see Equinox being downed to a lost magic: at it’s core, it’s just a mix of two magics, sorta like Poison-Lightning.
Most ancient magics that we know of aside from the grand fires were things that are closer to “concepts”, like “shatter” ↩︎
yeah curses are funny since the reason they’re called that is nothing in the AO verse though there are reasons I’d say that curse is the right now
-in AO if you cast magic you extend your life. Mages for this reason are nigh immortal as if they use their magic they extend their life. Look at theos he’s ancient and was starting to physically age but it didn’t really hold him back.
-the magic populated water weakness is a valid reason as the world is like 99% water in that verse
-the big reason is powerful curses (like the death curse) can possess you if you’re too weak (bum ass Morden) this is a very valid curse
-this is an extra point that only applies to mages. You become unable to use your magic without severe drawbacks and severely limited.

the previous curse user only needed to be extremely attuned to the curse before dying to achieve the haunting effect

Regarding the topic, I understand better now. So, Ancients are now based on complexity and concepts, and Losts are less complex and, even though they are conceptual, still less so than Ancients. Still, I don’t know why Scorch would be considered Ancient.
The dark sea is likely a death sentence to them. Sea water is bad because of magic pollution. That’s all the dark sea is
