Icarus
Been thinking and writing about him over a couple days and he’s gone from a pretty weak character to one of my favourite. I started thinking about characters a bit differently and I think its worked, but let me know what you think. The only thing missing here is a bit more context on Nishifubetu culture and the Nishifubet Civil War that begins in Icarus’ youth, but I can probably provide those another time.
In our world the name Icarus is Greek in origin, referring to the son of Daedalus who flew too close to the sun, falling and drowning in the Icarian Sea. In this world, Icarus is a very different name. Born in the southern nation of Nishifubetu, one cursed to exist eternally under a constant threat of war. At this time, Nishifubet is easily the largest country in the world (Since Akos’ nation Impexis had not won the Stamstani war yet), stretching across over half the southern coast of Hêyth Rejüsis.
The nation is named after its royal bloodline, the Nishifubet Family, who was cursed as the Immortal Bloodline by the Ers Seret Arasirikis Rethalliux, Ers Grath. The country cannot cease to exist, and it will always have a monarch since there will always be a male heir to succeed the throne, and no actions by anybody - including the family themselves - can prevent this from happening. However, the head of the Nishifubet family is not necessarily the leader of their nation - they are Emperor, and in title are the leader, but all those living in Nishifubet are stricken by a great jealousy and the one with the greatest military might in the nation who can fight for their claim to leadership may, and be titled Shogun.
In the year 995 (5001-f), a boy was born to Tanuma and Neviya Kobaspera and named was Icarus. Abuse from his father, as well as Tanuma’s fanatical devotion to an upcoming candidate for the title of Shogun known as Ishishudo Tayaduri, broke his family apart.
Despite Icarus’ attempt to fly away and break free of his father, Fethesi was already in effect, and the greatest enemy to peace the world had seen had already begun to be forged in fires. Afilisaka - named for a phenomenon in Nishifubetu where flammable gases in the air conflagrate, causing great flares to streak across the sky at night.
From my notes here is a timeline of Icarus’ journey up to seventeen years old.
Mid 1003
When Icarus was eight, tensions within Nishifubet began to rise as in the south and it was believed that another civil war would break out.
A new candidate for Shogun appeared not too far from Icarus’ hometown, Ishishudo Tayaduri and many in his hometown – including his father – voiced support for his campaign based on neglect towards their region by the emperor.
Also around this time, his father’s abuse towards his mother grew to a new extreme, culminating when one day a man came knocking at their door. Suspicious of potential agents from the Emperor, Tanuma tried to send the man away, but the man invited himself in anyway, stating that he was Michizoe Tanzara of the Chandrel aur Then. He inquired about Neviya’s injuries to which Tanuma forcefully tried to remove Michizoe from the house. Michizoe retreated only after Tanuma drew a knife. That evening, Tanuma beat both Neviya and Icarus, believing that they were connected to Michizoe. Two weeks later, Neviya disappeared, having left for the Chandrel.
From around here, Tanuma forced Icarus into long hours of strenuous training, trying to forge him into his ideal warrior for the upcoming shogun’s army – believing this would bring him a good standing with a new shogun.
Early 1008
Icarus grew a great resentment towards his father and Ishishudo Tayaduri, along with all his followers. He suffered greatly through the five years without his mother and grew to hate her as well for leaving him alone with Tanuma.
One evening in early 1008 shortly after the outbreak of the Seventieth Shogun’s Campaign (Ishishudo Tayaduri’s Campaign), Icarus killed Tanuma using his Karasumaku and fled.
Mid 1008
Icarus fled south and eventually arrived at a small coastal shipbuilding town called Manuak where he met a man called Urika Tokera who owned a yard working on timber for ships. Icarus disliked being subject to somebody else, but enjoyed the work, and got warm meals, shelter and pay in return.
Early 1010
Icarus lived and worked with Urika for a year and a half, peacefully and safely until the war grew closer to the coast.
Supporters of Tayaduri had arrived, and a skirmish between the local Emperor supporters and Tayaduri’s army broke out in Manuak, with Tayaduri’s forces winning. Amongst them was an old friend of his father’s Alaka Banadura, who recognised Icarus, having believed the boy dead or kidnapped after his father was murdered.
Eventually Alaka pieced together, based on Icarus’ reaction to him and refusal to provide details about how he survived that night, pieced together that Icarus was the one who killed his father and in the night came with three other soldiers to where he was staying with Urika.
Using a hatchet, Icarus attacked and killed all four of them, along with Urika who heard the fighting and saw Icarus murder the soldiers. He then fled Manuak, heading north.
Early 1011
For a few months, Icarus travelled through towns across the south-west of Nishifubet along the coastline, staying ahead of the war in the southern parts of the country, using the money he earnt from Urika to pay for food and shelter along the way.
Mid 1011
Icarus arrived at a town in what soon became Koroe called Kalitsu. There he met a girl his age called Reichera Sanabet who was working as waitress in a large tavern called the Nemekasur Manadri to help support her family. She talks with Icarus who introduces himself as Icarus Afilisaka, but admits his real name is Kobaspera after she pushes. The two get along and Reichera offers to ask her father if he could work as a mason with him for a while. Icarus is hesitant and wants to continue travelling, but takes a liking to Reichera and eventually agrees. He and her grow very close, and although Icarus wants to continue travelling, fearing that eventually the war would arrive, his feelings for Reichera keep him in Kalitsu.
For the first six months or so, their relationship is fine although there are some moments of tension - Icarus refuses to tell Reichera about his past and also dislikes Reichera’s belief and prayer to the Gods. He also at many points wishes to leave, afraid of what he’s done catching up to him. His love for Reichera keeps him from leaving however, and leaves him with a growing paranoia.
Late 1011
Seven months into their relationship Icarus and Reichera begin to argue more often. More news from the war arrives and it is clear political tensions in the region grow stronger with talks about western parts of Nishifubet seceding. Icarus grows distant and colder towards Reichera - scared about her finding out about his past, scared of her attachment, and increasingly paranoid - often only talking to her to demand something. One evening during an argument, Icarus hit Reichera - reminding himself of his father. He fled into the night with some food he stole from her house, his father’s Karasumaku, his money and the clothes on his back. He travelled further west, crossing over at the Four Bridges as the year came to its close.
Early 1012
While travelling southwest and low on food, Icarus found a temple and that evening broke into it, killing two temple guards and stealing bread, wine and fruit.
A week later, Icarus came across a small valley of dark rock near the westernmost border where he rested for the evening. In the morning he awoke and explored the valley. As he did so, he began to see the air ripple with a great network of pale strings, entangled in the air and culminating in a large web that hung over a cliff, where some sort of monument was carved into the face, although Icarus could not tell what it was depicting. Reaching into the web, Icarus grasped a sharp object, pulling out a small, pointed rock of a greenish-blue hue. The world went dark - and Icarus collapsed beneath the cliff.
